Knitting Textures

The Knitting Map is a hand knitted cartography of Cork City during 2005. Stiches and yarn colour were generated by software linked to how busy the city was (stitch) and the weather (yarn colour) This information was fed through to a knitting amphitheatre where screens indicated to knit this stitch in this colour on this particular day. A weather station documented temperature, wind speed and rainfall and this data was then linked to the colour of yarn. A series of CCTV cameras in Cork City Centre documented movement of traffic / people and this was linked to complexity of stitch – the busier the city the more complex the stitch, and the quieter, the simpler.
