Residencies – Summer 2023

Department of Theatre, UCC – July

Ceist Residency – Dance Cork Firkin Crane – Aug

Residencies with dance artists Justine Cooper and Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín, took place for three weeks in summer 2023. This gave us opportunity to bring field / studio research from collaborative R&D with ecologist / textile artist Veronica Santorum and the sound / media artist Benjamin Burns into the performance studio. Working with Veronica’s resonant and richly layered felted fabrics, dyed with natural dyes from plants gathered (sustainably) from Cloonshannagh bog, as well as masks and structures from natural materials allowed the dance artists to take a deep dive into the worlds of ancient and contemporary Irish wetlands. Benjamin Burns worked live in the studio with field recordings and processes of weaving with sound as we developed choreographic scores and performance. We were also able to share early-stage research on developing ‘lively fabrics’ in collaboration with the Tyndall Institute.

A sharing of work in progress took place at Dance Cork Firkin Crane on Fri 25th Aug 2023.

Funded by an Arts Council Dance Bursary, Science Foundation Ireland (Insight) and UCC Future Humanities Institute.
